Make sense of permit paperwork with AI, for contractors
You spend late evenings digging through city permit packets and plan check corrections to figure out what the inspector wants next. Hand those confusing packets to AI so you get a plain checklist of tasks in order before you step on the job site.
What to gather first
- The city plan check comments
- Your current scope of work notes
- The official permit requirement sheet
Which app
For this one, a plain AI chat window is enough. Open the chat, paste what you gathered, and type the message below.
How to do it
- Drop the paperwork into AI. Take the plan check notes, city correction notices, or permit packets and upload them to AI. You can attach PDFs or paste the raw text straight from your city portal.
- Ask for an ordered list. Tell AI to pull out every required inspection, sign-off, and paper you must file. It reads through the city jargon and groups the tasks by trades and stages of the build.
- Read the draft checklist. Look through the steps AI pulled from the city packet. It lists what needs to happen before the rough inspection, what goes on the site board, and what waits for the final walkthrough.
- Fix the schedule details. Adjust any steps that do not match how your crew works on the ground. Keep the clean checklist on your phone or print it for the job trailer.
What to type first
Here is the plan check correction letter from the city building department for our current job. Read the notes and list every item we need to fix or schedule, ordered by build phase. Group them by rough inspections, trade sign-offs, and final steps. Do not write to the city or change any plans.
Change the words to match your business. AI follows what you say, so say what done looks like.
Before you trust it
- Check that every numbered item from the city sheet is on your list.
- Make sure the required inspection order matches how your subs work on site.
- Verify who must sign each line, whether it is your crew, the architect, or the city inspector.
Once this works, paste subcontractor submittals into AI to match them against the permit conditions.
