Codex vs Claude Code vs Hermes Agent: which one should a business owner start with?

Start with Hermes Desktop if you want the simplest free trial. Choose Claude Code for paid file work and service connections, or Codex for OpenAI's app, sandbox, and computer tools.

Start with Hermes Desktop

Hermes Desktop is the easiest first test for many owners. The app is free to download and use. It's open source under the MIT license.

It runs on macOS 12 or later, Windows 10 or 11, and Linux. Mac and Windows users get a standard installer. Linux users install it in a terminal.

Hermes can read and change local files. Its file browser shows the working folder. Its embedded browser can preview pages and attach notes to page parts.

It can use cloud models through your own provider key. It can also connect to local models. An optional Nous Portal subscription provides access to cloud models and tool credits. The brief doesn't list an exact Portal price.

Start here if you want to learn the agent workflow without buying the app. Keep in mind that cloud models or hosted tools may still cost money.

For macOS, Linux, or WSL, the command is curl -fsSL https://hermes-agent.nousresearch.com/install.sh | bash. Windows PowerShell uses iex (irm https://hermes-agent.nousresearch.com/install.ps1). On Linux, open the app with hermes desktop.

Choose Claude Code for connected file work

Claude Code has desktop, web, and terminal versions. The desktop app runs on macOS and Windows. Ubuntu and Debian support is in beta.

Claude Code can inspect, create, and edit local files. It can run terminal commands and show file changes for review. Approved MCP connections can link it with services such as Google Drive, Slack, Notion, Shopify, and HubSpot.

As of September 2026, Claude Pro costs $20 a month. Claude Max costs $100 to $200 a month. Team and Enterprise plans are also available. Console API use is billed as you go.

Start here if your work spans many files or approved business services. It's also a good fit when you want visual diff review in the desktop app.

Choose Codex for the OpenAI workspace

Codex has a desktop app for macOS and Windows. It also has web, terminal, and editor versions.

Codex can read and edit files in a chosen directory. It can run commands inside a configurable sandbox. Its app includes a browser. On macOS, background computer use can see, click, and type in other apps.

As of September 2026, ChatGPT Plus includes Codex for $20 a month. ChatGPT Pro costs $200 a month. Business, Enterprise, and Edu plans also include Codex. Extra usage credits may cost more.

Start here if you already use ChatGPT Plus or need OpenAI's workspace tools. It's also the clearest choice among these three for approved background computer use on a Mac.

Install the command-line tool with npm install -g @openai/codex. Then start it with codex. You can skip the terminal and download the desktop app instead.

Compare the fit, not just the model

All three products are agent harnesses. Each puts tools, a work loop, and controls around an LLM. The app around the model affects what it can do.

Ask four questions before choosing:

  1. Which files, browsers, or services must it use?
  2. Can you limit access to one working folder?
  3. Can you review changes before they take effect?
  4. Does its full cost fit your normal workload?

Hermes gives you the lowest-cost way to learn. Claude Code offers broad file and service work. Codex offers a mature OpenAI app and sandboxed tools.

Don't start by connecting a live customer system. Copy a small, real task into a separate folder. Ask for a new output file, then check it yourself.
